UEA500: First Solar Park in the Ecuadorian Amazon
A pioneering project for the energy transition in Ecuador.
On June 6, 2024, Belga Solar signed a historic partnership for the construction of a 500 kWp solar plant in the Amazon region. Just a few months later, on January 29, 2025, this vision became a reality with the inauguration of the first photovoltaic solar park in the Ecuadorian Amazon, located on the campus of the Universidad Estatal Amazónica (UEA) in Puyo.
This project, known as UEA500, perfectly embodies Belga Solar’s mission: delivering clean, accessible, and sustainable energy through exemplary international cooperation.
A solar installation serving a university and its students
With 1,220 Belga Solar photovoltaic panels, the solar park now covers 100% of the university’s electricity demand. Nearly 5,000 students and faculty members directly benefit from this local, renewable energy source.
Each year, the installation will generate around 593 MWh of green electricity, preventing the emission of approximately 287 tons of CO₂eq. Beyond the figures, the project provides an entire academic community with a stable and sustainable energy supply, right in the heart of the Amazon.
A symbol of Belgian–Ecuadorian cooperation
UEA500 is the result of close cooperation between Belgium and Ecuador.
-
The project was made possible thanks to non-refundable financing from the Belgian government, via Finexpo and AWEX (Wallonia Export & Investment Agency).
-
It was jointly implemented by Belga Solar, Belgium’s solar panel manufacturer, and Energiqa, a specialist in solar energy integration.
-
It relied on the trust and commitment of the Universidad Estatal Amazónica.
Beyond technology, this project carries a strong human dimension: Ecuadorian technicians will travel to Belgium for specialized training, ensuring the long-term operation and maintenance of the solar park.
Advancing research and education
By covering all of its energy needs, the university now stands as a regional model of sustainability. Students have access to a living laboratory for their research, while gaining hands-on training in cutting-edge renewable energy technologies.
UEA500 is not only a solar park — it is also a pedagogical tool and a catalyst for sustainable development.
