In Belgium, your electricity bill strongly depends on your region. As of 2026, Wallonia will introduce a new incentive-based pricing model for low-voltage users. Flanders, on the other hand, has already implemented a capacity tariff since 2023. Understanding these differences is crucial to optimizing your solar self-consumption and reducing your costs.
In Wallonia: A New Pricing Model Starting in 2026
Starting in January 2026, CWaPE, the Walloon energy regulator, will implement a new grid tariff for users connected to low-voltage networks (up to 56 kVA) who are equipped with a digital smart meter.
This incentive-based model aims to encourage consumers to adjust their energy usage according to the time of day. Prices will vary across five time slots, divided into three tariff levels: low (night and early morning), medium (off-peak hours), and high (peak hours). This tariff will be automatically applied from 2026 unless you still have an electromechanical meter.
Optimizing Your Solar Self-Consumption in Wallonia
With this new tariff structure, photovoltaic installations become more profitable when combined with a battery or an energy management system. Storing energy during low-rate hours and using it during high-rate periods maximizes your savings. Additionally, programming household appliances outside peak hours becomes a smart habit.
In Flanders: A Capacity Tariff Already in Effect
Since January 2023, Flanders has applied a tariff based on peak power. This model does not take the time of consumption into account. Your bill primarily depends on the highest power reached during any 15-minute interval in the month. Even a brief but intense usage (e.g., electric vehicle charging + oven + heating simultaneously) can result in significant extra charges.
This model encourages consumers to spread their electricity use and avoid power peaks.
